Open Data Vs. Open Code: The Differences Matter - Marc Prioleau, Overture Maps Foundation
Wednesday November 20, 2024 2:00pm - 2:30pm PST
In this session led by Marc Prioleau, Executive Director of Overture Maps Foundation, we explore the often-misunderstood distinction between open map data and open source code. While open source code underpins many software projects within the Linux Foundation, open map data, especially in the context of Overture Maps Foundation's work presents unique challenges and opportunities. This talk will: - Clarify the differences and overlaps between open data and open source code. - Discuss the specific challenges in creating and maintaining open map data in the case of Overture Maps - Highlight how open data contributes uniquely to technological advancements, distinct from open source software. - Address common misconceptions in the open source community regarding these two domains.

Facilitated Discussion: Unpacking the ‘Source’ of the Matter: The Impacts, Tools, and Considerations of the U.S. Government - Cali Dolfi, Red Hat
Wednesday November 20, 2024 2:00pm - 3:15pm PST
Since US President Joe Biden issued an executive order specifying requirements for SBOMs among software suppliers to US federal agencies, there have been more questions than answers regarding what this would look like, even from the US government itself. This time will be a facilitated discussion around what this means specifically for open source communities and corporate entities that use open source in their products. Some of the potential discussion areas: Do people view this as a potential limiting factor for corporate use of open source software? What are the potential impacts of this requirement on open source? Is the Secure Software Development Framework (SSDF) useful and realistic? With the goal of risk, vulnerability, and incident management, does the proposed SBOM structure “work” to analyze open source software? What tools are people currently using to make and analyze SBOMs? As input is still being considered, is there anything from an open source perspective that we should be advocating for?

Panel Discussion: Insights from OSPOs for Good - Ruth Suehle, SAS; Arun Gupta, Intel; Hilary Carter, The Linux Foundation; Sachiko Muto, RISE
Wednesday November 20, 2024 3:45pm - 4:15pm PST
In July, the United Nations hosted the second OSPOs for Good symposium to bring together open source thought leaders to discuss using OSPOs as a global network for helping reach the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Discussions touched on open source and AI, OSPOs in government and networked cities, software security, and the impact open source can have on research and science. This panel brings together several of the speakers from the event to talk about their perspectives and the next steps we can take together to use the power of the open source ecosystem for good.

Adopting CDEvents and Embracing Interoperability - Andrea Frittoli, IBM
Wednesday November 20, 2024 3:45pm - 4:15pm PST
The software delivery lifecycle landscape (SDLC) is rich with tools and services that help engineers automate every step and aspect of the software production process: configuration management, testing, build tools, artefact storage, deployment and monitoring. How do we connect all these tools, and adopt supply chain security best practices while maintaining a good developer experience from beginning to end? The CDEvents project aims to help solve this problem through standardisation and interoperability. In this talk, the speaker will introduce CDEvents, its vision, the latest news and roadmap; he will present how the project’s shared event format is being adopted by various tools across the SDLC and how interoperability enables a consistent developer experience and helps to achieve a secure software factory.
